Limits, breaks and help lines

Help in Saskatchewan starts with one free, confidential helpline, answered by trained counsellors 24 hours a day. From there it goes on to free counselling and to self-exclusion programs that bar a person from every casino in the province.

Spec 01

Three contacts to keep

  • Saskatchewan Problem Gambling Helpline: 1-800-306-6789. Trained counsellors answer it 24 hours a day, and calls are free and confidential.
  • Saskatchewan residents can get free problem-gambling counselling through the Saskatchewan Health Authority. No doctor's referral is needed.
  • File Hills Qu'Appelle White Raven Healing Centre in Fort Qu'Appelle, toll-free 1-866-748-8922. SIGA lists it for First Nations treatment.

Spec 02

A break from all nine casinos

SIGA Voluntary Self-Exclusion can be requested at any SIGA casino, including the one north of Carlyle. The exclusion lasts anywhere from 6 months to 5 years. For that whole period, it bars the person from all nine casinos in Saskatchewan, not only the SIGA ones. Game Break, run by SaskGaming, is a second program that also covers the province's casinos, and it adds PlayNow.com.

Neither program blocks a private online site. A self-exclusion requested at a casino does not reach them. Age works as a separate barrier. At SIGA casinos, anyone under 19 is a prohibited individual and cannot gamble or collect winnings. The legal gambling age in Saskatchewan is 19.

Spec 03

Time and money, decided in advance

Two numbers are worth fixing before the evening starts: how many hours to stay and how much money to spend. When either one runs out, the evening ends, even if the other has some left. Writing both down before leaving home makes them harder to stretch later. The floor closes at midnight every day, which gives a fixed end point for anyone who arrives in the afternoon or after dinner. If keeping to a limit gets hard, the Saskatchewan Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-306-6789 answers at any hour.
